Juneteenth
June 19, 1965 - Freedom Day

Juneteenth has become such a big deal in Charleston, SC over the past few years and that makes me so happy! I remember when I first heard about the holiday as an adult. I was surprised to learn that it had been conveniently left out of our history books- at least I don't remember learning about it. If it hadn't been maybe I would have been more inclined to pay attention in class. History has always been one of the most boring subjects to me but now I realize it was boring because I prefer to learn about my own history and not the one conjured up by someone who doesn't care about the TRUTH.
Juneteenth is officially known as Juneteenth National Independence Day. June 19th, commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States. The enslaved African Americans in Galveston, TX were the last to find out they were freed because news traveled slow back then. However, once they did the celebration began. Since then Juneteenth has been celebrated by African Americans across the United States. A special shout out to President Joe Biden for signing the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law in 2021. We hadn't had a new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day back in 1983 (Wikipedia.org)
This past weekend Juneteenth was celebrated throughout the Lowcountry with festivals and events commemorating the emancipation of African Americans. There are also a few activities this week leading up to the actual date of June 19th. Carolima's is proud to participate as a vendor at two events on Wednesday, June 19th. We will be offering our delicious, made from scratch desserts at Trident Medical Center from 11am-2pm and Juneteenth on King from 6pm-9pm. Stop by and check us out! We're happy to serve you and we even have a few surprises!
